Intelligence Becomes Cheap, Meaning Becomes Expensive

Artificial intelligence may not make humans obsolete. It may instead force humanity to rediscover meaning.

For most of human history, intelligence was scarce.

The ability to write, calculate, compose music, design systems, or synthesize knowledge belonged to a relatively small number of people.

Civilizations were built around this scarcity.

Schools filtered for it.
Corporations hired for it.
Markets rewarded it.
Societies respected it.

Intelligence functioned as leverage.

That assumption is now beginning to collapse.

Artificial intelligence is making intelligence abundant.

Not consciousness.
Not wisdom.
Not meaning.

Just intelligence.

And those are not the same thing.

Increasingly, tasks once associated with expertise can now be performed instantly:

  • writing
  • coding
  • design
  • research
  • music generation
  • strategy synthesis
  • translation
  • analysis

What once required years of training may soon require only good prompting — or eventually, no prompting at all.

The cost of cognition is falling.

Fast.

Most people still underestimate the psychological consequences of this shift.

The economic consequences are easier to understand.

But the deeper transformation is existential.

Because once intelligence becomes abundant, humanity loses one of its primary mechanisms for differentiation.

For a long time, intelligence helped answer questions like:

  • Who is valuable?
  • Who creates?
  • Who leads?
  • Who matters?

AI destabilizes all of these simultaneously.

The internet made information abundant.

AI makes synthesis abundant.

This changes civilization more profoundly than most people realize.

Information abundance changed media.

Intelligence abundance changes identity.

For decades, creative and intellectual work carried a kind of spiritual prestige.

Writers wrote.
Artists created.
Engineers built.
Researchers discovered.

These activities were not merely economic functions.

They were sources of meaning.

Now machines participate in all of them.

Sometimes convincingly.

Sometimes beautifully.

Sometimes better than humans.

This creates an unusual emotional atmosphere:

a mixture of awe, acceleration, excitement, grief, and disorientation.

Many people feel it already, even if they cannot articulate it.

Recently, while experimenting with AI-generated music and synthetic voice systems, I trained a model on my own voice.

Then I heard an artificial version of myself singing words I never actually sang.

The experience felt technically impressive.

But also psychologically strange.

Not because the voice sounded fake.

Because it sounded real enough.

A boundary had moved.

Quietly.

Irreversibly.

The unsettling part of AI is not that machines are becoming human.

It is that human uniqueness is becoming harder to define.

For years, society treated intelligence as the ultimate scarce resource.

But scarcity is shifting elsewhere.

Toward:

  • taste
  • judgment
  • coherence
  • authenticity
  • trust
  • emotional resonance
  • meaning

In a world flooded with generated intelligence, humans may increasingly search for signals that feel real.

Not optimized.

Real.

This may explain why spirituality, philosophy, and identity questions are quietly returning.

Not despite technological acceleration.

But because of it.

As intelligence becomes cheaper, meaning becomes more valuable.

The next era may not belong to those with the most information.

Nor even the highest intelligence.

It may belong to those capable of integrating intelligence into something coherent, human, and meaningful.

Because intelligence alone does not tell civilization what to value.

It only amplifies whatever civilization already desires.

And that may ultimately become the most dangerous part.
